Nordaq’s reusable water bottle and filtration system eliminated more than 31 million single-use plastic or glass bottles in 2019, DeepStream fully supports that effort, shipping custom room service carts worldwide.
DeepStream’s rolling Hotel Water Service Cart is the end component in the NORDAQ Water System to assist environmentally concerned hotels in the distribution of refillable glass water bottles from the service area to the hotel rooms and back.
Three trays each holding 30 bottles, for a capacity of 90 large bottles per cart. While a 16-gauge stainless steel top is shown, Corian, Caesarstone, or natural stone tops are other options. Side panels can be customized to fit the decor of any hotel, and the carts will look attractive left in the beverage nook for guests to replenish their rooms without detracting from their surroundings.

Mandarin Oriental Miami contacted DeepStream to create an attractive, ergonomic Water Bottle Service Cart that would meet their high-design criteria and ease delivery of the new Nordaq refillable glass water bottles with a furniture-quality cart that could sit in their hallways. The property had purchased DeepStream’s Mariner Ipe Planters with anodized aluminum frame for their outdoor dining area in 2014, so Management knew firsthand the quality and longevity of our products.

DeepStream was created in a response to a need. While building a condominium project, I reviewed the “universe” of garden planters and receptacles. I wanted planters, receptacles, and custom fixtures for my project that were just not available.
Wood planters were carpenter-built with wood-on-wood construction. As I’ve detailed in my Planter Blog, they just don’t last. Carpenter-built wood planters tear themselves apart in 3-4 years in Miami’s hot tropical climate.
I did find other materials suitable for the indoor recycling and trash receptacles I was designing, such as the 3form Eco-resin panels shown on the receptacles in the picture above at the Orlando International Airport, where the airport authority is committed to sustainability and DeepStream. These panels, however, were not a suitable replacement for wood in exterior, especially wet, locations.
Wasting valuable wood harvested from the world’s rapidly diminishing rainforests, let alone with carpenter-built construction methods, not only destroys the forests, it also wastes your time, money, and energy.

Green City Growers partnered with Recovery Green Roofs, to bring farming to the roof of Fenway Park. Recover Green Roofs is the Somerville-based green roofing company that installed Fenway Farms. Recover Green Roofs was responsible for getting the soil on the roof, garden design and the sophisticated labor and water saving irrigation system, while Green City Growers is responsible for the farming operation. Donations to the community are handled by Lovin’ Spoonfuls.
Around the corner on the Strega Deck, more produce is grown in an upscale event space behind the private corporate suites. DeepStream Designs, founded to provide an alternative to the wasteful use of tropical hardwood lumber, was selected to provide the light-weight, cost saving multi-section aluminum planter frame system fitted with recycled HDPE lumber planks, recycled from milk bottles.
These attractive planters have an internal plastic liner and hide drip irrigation lines, and their aluminum structural design ensures the planters will last for decades. The liner-within-the planter design also provides a thermal break so that the root systems never overheat from solar gain.

A key component of sustainable design is adaptability. Good design allows for the replacement, or reworking, of components to preserve the value and materials of an earlier design when a situation requires it. Even if that situation arises early in the life cycle of a design.
Nowhere is that more apparent than when an error has been made on large complex projects where a miscalculation between initial measurements and “as-built” dimension means that components ordered months earlier in a project do not fit when finally installed.
You can see in this example where DeepStream’s modular planter design allowed us to cut down the lengths of planks in the middle section of a multi-section planter to accommodate an unrecorded change in dimensions at very little cost in dollars or materials.
While the wood will take a week or so to fade to the match color the same design feature allows for replacement of parts or further adaptation for the life of the planter.

Whether recycling or trash bin, top loading or side access, all bins are made with a sanitary grid, in place of the normal floor pan, to support leak-proof commercial grade recycled plastic inner liners, so there is nothing to leak or catch waste, thus preventing pest infestations.
Side panels can be created of virtually any material which is less than ½” thick, even fabric or photographs. Thicker material can be used if the edge can be routed, even stone. This allows recycling to be integrated seamlessly into more areas of your property, camouflaging bins or even bringing greater attention to them. Directional signage and employee changeable messages or graphics are easily accommodated. Each panel can be made from different materials, allowing for low-cost panels to be used for backs and sides that will not be viewed when the bin is in place.
Materials: The materials used in our designs (marine-anodized aluminum, stainless steel and HDPE) allow for use in salty, wet marine environments, and all are easily recyclable. Commercial-grade interior bins are replaceable and are themselves made with recycled plastic.
While almost any material can be used for the decorative side panels, DeepStream works with clients to choose materials appropriate for the environmental conditions in which the bins will be placed. There are many materials to choose from, including recycled resin panels made by 3Form and other companies that use natural and recycled materials as design components.
Our heavy-duty construction even allows the use of wood panels in bins placed outside as the frame components contain and direct the incredible differential forces wood creates when it expands and contracts in the rain and sun, delivering decades of attractive service. The modular nature of our products creates an adaptability factor that we consider a hallmark of our sustainable design philosophy: Why replace when you can adapt?
An example is this cover we created to adapt DeepStream receptacles for a school in California committed to recycling but found it was also home for feisty squirrels. The “weather-proof critter cover” also works well to keep out heavy rains and snow.
If your bin is outside and you have raccoons, or neighbor who use your bins, you can order your cover and lid with a low-profile slot and hasp for a lock. Both are an easy retrofit in the field.
Adaptability was made possible by a simple and robust hinge design, just like DeepStream’s modern receptacles. The flap is constructed from 18-gauge 316-stainless steel whereas the lid is 16-gauge. A robust but low profile 316-stainless steel piano hinge attaches with flush fasteners.
The handle is a standard distance between holes so it can be replaced or customized wherever kitchen hardware is sold. If your application is near salt water or completely out in the rain, you will appreciate that the cover, like the lid, is 316, not 304, stainless steel to reduce maintenance.
The only compromise we have found in this adapted design is that simple care needs to be taken when opening the lid to replace the bags that line the inner bins. However, it is an intuitive maneuver to open the lid with one hand while holding and gently lowering the cover with the other hand. Order a Audubon receptacle and there is a side door for inner bin and bag changes.
While wood-on-wood planter construction will last 3 to 5 years, DeepStream’s Mariner garden planters are engineered to last for decades, giving the lowest cost of ownership over time, and are backed with a Lifetime Structural Warranty.
If your ownership or responsibility for the building where planters will be placed will last more than five years, give serious consideration as to what it will mean in terms of cost and disruption to go back and replace or repair planters, especially on rooftops and balconies, every 3 – 5 years.
The Mariner test planter shown below, with only an initial waterproofing at our workshop, has been exposed to the Miami sun and rain for with no maintenance for seven years.

Wood-on-wood planter construction uses carpentry techniques that fasten wood to wood, and planters tear themselves apart with the expansive forces that wood exerts through repeated wet and dry cycles.
Why? Each wooden plank is cut from a different part of the tree or even different trees. This means each plank has its own differential rate of expansion and warping when wetted. This makes dimensional stability using standard wood-on-wood construction in two dimensions impossible to maintain over time, and shipbuilding techniques and maintenance are far too costly for planter construction. In addition, most wood planters lack adequate isolation from the soil and the deck or sidewalk, which promotes fresh water rot.
For centuries, wood dowels have been inserted into holes drilled into rock, then soaked with water. The expansion force of the wood is thus harnessed to crack blocks off marble and granite for construction, even though the blocks are hundreds of times thicker than the thin wooden dowel.
DeepStream uses proprietary marine anodized legs and stainless steel fasteners to clamp the wood and direct the expansionary so that the wood can expand and contract at different rates without affecting the planter’s structural integrity. The commercial grade rigid plastic liners, mounted on an independent aluminum frame, contain the soil and prevent contact between the soil and the wood.
Aluminum legs are protected and galvanically isolated from a wet deck by using plastic, HDPE, feet. Even stainless steel fasteners are galvanically isolated by using a proprietary dielectric paste so that they may be removed easily years later to replace parts or refinish the planter easily as shown in the before and after pictures below of a 7-year-old planter that only had the original coat of factory waterproofing and no maintenance. This “fresh” look was achieved by sanding off just.014” of the planks exterior.

The near flawless proprietary marine anodized leg, show below, after cleaning with mineral spirits. Disassembly for sanding was easy thanks to the proprietary dielectric paste used to prevent corrosion between the stainless steel fasteners and the aluminum leg.
